Matilda is a musical by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. It is based on the Roald Dahl book by the same name. After a successful 12 week run with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010, the show transferred to the West End’s Cambridge Theatre in November 2011. The musical also opened on Broadway in April 2013.
The story follows that a five year old girl called Matilda who faces cruelty at home and at school. However, being a crafty and naughty little thing she perseveres, causing a few mischiefs along the way. She masterminds a plot to oust the dictatorial and cruel school principle, Miss Trunchbull, who subjects the children to cruel punishments including the chokey, and with the help of her class mates she succeeds. They all live happily ever after.
