The Show

Wicked is a musical by Winnie Holzman, with music by Stephen Schwartz, and it is based on Gregory Maguire’s ‘The Life and Times of the Wicked Witches of the West’, which gives an alternative viewpoint to the 1900 classic book by L Frank Baum ‘The Wizard of Oz’.

Wicked follows the story of two witches, Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Upland. Elphaba begins her journey when she accompanies her younger sister, Nessarose, to Shiz. She is laughed at and stared at for her green-ness by other students but is looked upon with favour by Madam Morrible who spots her unique talent and powers.

She is put in the same room as Glinda, and, initially, the pair clash but in the end come together and appreciate what they have learnt from each other.  There is a love triangle between the two witches and the dashing, scandalous prince, Fiyero.  Both the witches are in love with him and, in the end, he makes the unlikely choice of Elphaba over Glinda.

The show premiered in May 2003 in San Francisco, and opened on Broadway later that year. Following success on Broadway, the musical opened in the West End’s Apollo Victoria Theatre in 2006 and is currently celebrating its 10th year.

Wicked features many iconic musical theatre songs, such as ‘Defying Gravity’, ‘The Wizard and I’, ‘Dancing Through Life’, ‘Popular’ and ‘No Good Deed’.
